Worcester, Mass. – Behind a dominating performance in doubles play in which they lost just one point, Clark University rolled to a decisive 9-0 win over visiting Rhode Island College (1-6) in non-league men's tennis action on Monday afternoon at Corash Tennis Courts.
With the win the Cougars improve to 8-6 and have won four of the last five matches with the Anchormen dating back to the 2009 season.
Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) and Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) continued their excellent play together at No. 1 doubles, topping Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Ben Proctor (Cumberland, R.I.), 8-1.
Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) swept past Matt Collins (Rumford, R.I.) and Mike McCaffrey (Cumberland, R.I.), 8-0 at No. 2 and Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) and Scott Cabell (West Hartford, Conn.) followed that with the exact same score over Ted James (West Greenwich, R.I.) and Cory Duquette (Warwick, R.I.).
All six singles matches were straight set victories for the Cougars, led by Angel defeating Werchadlo 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 and Goodstein ousting Proctor 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) had no trouble with McCaffrey at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0), while the same was the case for Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) in his victory over James at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1.
Spencer Brightman (Sudbury, Mass.) cruised by Collins 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and Cabell wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Duquette.
It's a quick turnaround for the Cougars, who will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., while the Anchormen will look to snap their current six match losing streak with a trip to Gordon College on Thursday.
