Box Score 4 Hartford, Conn. – Playing in the two-day, four-match Trinity Invitational, Clark University went 1-3, falling to both Western Connecticut and host Trinity on Friday and then split Saturday's meetings, dropping its opener to Wesleyan before besting Worcester State.
Trinity 3, Clark 1 (22-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-13)
Kate Giddens powered the Bantams to the four-set win with a 20-kill, six-dig, five-service ace and three block solo performance. Not to be outdone, teammate Hannah Brickley chipped in with 18 kills and 11 digs.
After dropping the first set, 25-22, Clark evened the match with a 26-24 win in the second set, but Trinity won the final two, 26-24 and 25-13 to take the match.
Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Cougars with 12 kills and 12 digs, while Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) added nine kills and 18 digs.
Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) recorded 28 digs and Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, Calif.) totaled 25 assists and 14 digs.
Wesleyan 3, Clark 1 (25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 24-26)
The host Cardinals had Kate Centofanti and Kim Farris combine for 43 kills and Wesleyan rallied for a four-set victory at home.
Setter Clare Larson set up most of the kills for the Cardinal attackers, handing out 59 assists.
Clark won the first set 25-21, but from there on it was all Cardinals as they won the final three.
The Cougars were paced by Glass-Smythe (11 kills, 18 digs) and Courtney Pharr (Seattle, Wash.), who added ten of her own. Cattaneo continued her strong performance on the defensive end, racking up a match-high 29 digs, while Spera rang up 27 helpers.
Clark 3, Worcester State 0 (25-21, 25-23, 26-24)
The Cougars salvaged the weekend with a hard-fought three-set sweep of crosstown rival Worcester State in Middletown, Conn.
Pharr led the Scarlet and White with ten kills, while Glass-Smythe added eight and Sanford chipped in with seven to highlight the Clark offense.
Playing in just two sets, Spera had 24 assists, while Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.), making her collegiate debut on the day, added 14 helpers of her own.
The Cougars (5-4) open up NEWMAC play with a road trip to Smith on Tuesday before playing host to a tri-match next Saturday that features Coast Guard and Keene State.
