Beverly, Mass. – Playing the first of their two fall matches, visiting Clark University opened up the 2014 season in fine fashion, posting an impressive 7-2 win over Endicott College on Thursday afternoon at the South Campus Courts.
The Cougars won two of the three doubles matches in jumping out to an early 2-1 lead. Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) breezed past Sean McAndrews and Eric Gandrup, 8-1, while Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) posted the same result over Evan Ross and Michael Dolph.
Endicott (0-1) did win third doubles, as their combination of Justin Warshavsky and Michael Lauretano bested Clark's duo of Spencer Brightman (Sudbury, Mass.) and Phillip Porter (Cortland Manor, N.Y.), 8-2.
Singles action was controlled by the Cougars as well, as all five of their singles victories were straight set triumphs.
Stein, playing at No. 1, topped Ross, 6-1, 6-1 and Martin had an easy time with Dolph at No. 2, 6-2, 7-5. Pinkney, playing in his first career match, rolled past Warshavsky, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Pinoargote faced little resistance from Lauretano at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0.
Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) dispatched of McAndrews at No. 5, 6-4, 6-3 but the match of the day was the Gulls' Clay Arnold's three-set win over Brightman. After dropping the first set 2-6, he rebounded to win the second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6) and then took the third set, 10-7.
Clark (1-0) will next be in action a week from Friday when several members of the program take part in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championships at Middlebury College.
