Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Tournament Most Outstanding Player Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, Calif.) handed out 68 assists – 34 in each game – to surpass 2,000 for her career and host Clark University won both of its contests to lay claim to the 2013 Worcester City Volleyball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Kneller Gymnasium.
Spera led the Cougars to 3-0 wins over both Worcester State and WPI to win their third city tournament title in the last four seasons.
Game 1: Clark 3, Worcester State 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21)
Spera handed out a season-best 34 helpers and Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) racked up 16 kills en route to the 3-0 win. Anne Read (Arundel, Maine) chipped in with ten kills of her own to go along with five solo blocks and two block assists to push the Cougars into the championship match. Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) had a team-best five kills for the Lancers, while Amanda Lewis dished out 20 helpers and Vicki O'Brien (Canton, Mass.) added 14 digs for the Lancers.
Game 2: WPI 3, Becker 0 (25-13, 25-14, 30-28)
The Engineers fought off a hard-charging group of Hawks in the third set to take the second semifinal matchup, 3-0. Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, Calif.) continued the impressive start to her collegiate career with a team-high 12 kills, while Sarah Cook (New Paltz, N.Y.) added ten to help the WPI offensive attack. The two-headed setting monster of Caroline Meyer (Easton, Mass.) and Lucy Garvey (Westerly, R.I.) combined for 30 assists. Beth Stone (Norwich, Conn.) and Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) each had five kills for Becker, who also got ten assists and six digs from Lauren Lavallee (Millbury, Mass.).
Game 3: Worcester State 3, Becker 0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-19)
Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) collected 18 assists and the Lancers took advantage of 13 service errors by the Hawks to claim third-place in the tournament. Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) and Megan Brown (Dartmouth, Mass.) combined for eight kills as Worcester State won their first match of the season. Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) had a strong match for Becker, posting three kills and five block assists.
Game 4: Clark 3, WPI (25-19, 28-26, 25-23)
In the championship match, Clark got nine kills from Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) and seven apiece from both Anne Read (Arundel, Maine) and Savonnah Rowe (New York, N.Y.) in the three-set win. Spera dished out 34 helpers to go along with six digs, while Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) notched her fourth straight game with double digit digs with 13. WPI was paced by a match-high 12 kills from Maddy Werth (Bedford, Mass.), while Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, Calif.) and Kenzie Whalen (Hollis, N.H.) each added seven. Caroline Meyer (Easton, Mass.) racked up 26 assists and five digs.
