Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Freshman Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) erupted for a career-best four goals – all in the second half – and host Clark University picked up their first win of the season with an impressive 5-0 win over Worcester-area rival Becker College on Saturday afternoon at the Granger Turf Field.
The win for the Cougars capped an emotional day as the program honored teammate Amanda Mundt who passed away this summer in Haiti in a car accident that took the lives of two others and severely injured Clark professor David Bell.
Wearing purple wristbands to honor their fallen teammate, the Cougars scored the only goal in the first half off of a penalty corner as Mackey fed Kiah Murphy (Westport, Mass.) with 7:14 remaining in the period.
Then midway through the second half Mackey – wearing Mundt's old No. 20 – exploded scoring her four goals in a span of 21 minutes.
The first came with the help of fellow first-year Isabelle Zoeckler (Madison, Conn.) in the 49th minute for a 2-0 Clark advantage.
Less than two minutes later Mackey was at it again, banging home another tally with help from Kelly Hart (Oak Park, Ill.).
She completed the natural hat trick when she scored her third straight at 55:32, then registered her fourth off of another penalty corner with just 1:01 remaining in regulation.
Clark controlled the contest, outshooting the Hawks 36-0 and holding a 13-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.) was terrific for Becker in between the pipes, recording 29 saves in the loss.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, with The Cougars (1-1) hosting Nichols College and Becker visiting Johnson & Wales.
