Norton, Mass. – The doubles combinations of Dan Stein and Zack Goodstein and Spencer Brightman and Phillip Porter each won their flight championship to highlight a strong day of action for the Clark University men's tennis team at the Wheaton Invitational on Sunday.
Playing in the Flight "A" semifinals, Stein and Goodstein outlasted the Nichols College duo of Josh Halpern and James Smith, 8-6.
They then went on to knock off Wheaton College's David Gassen and Lawrence Chan, 8-5, to claim the title.
Meanwhile, Brightman and Porter - playing together for just the third time – topped Wheaton's Tyler Smith and Dave Scott, 8-5 in the semifinals and then defeated the Lyons' tandem of Sam Jackson and Alden Zeff, 9-7 to win the Flight "B" crown.
In singles play, Wheaton's Jonah Feit defeated Antonie Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) 6-2, 6-1 in the Flight "A" semifinals, but Martin bounced back in the consolation finals, besting Dan Sharon of Wheaton, 6-3, 6-3.
Wheaton's Shrever Archer edged out Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) 7-5, 6-3 in one of the Flight "B" semifinals, while Carlos De La Cruz of Nichols dispatched Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Pinoargote then got past his teammate Pinkney, 7-6 in the "B" consolation finals.
After dropping a straight set decision to Joan Castillio (6-1, 6-1) in the semifinals, Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) rallied for a three set win (3-6, 7-6, 10-5) over Will White in the Flight "C" consolation finals.
