Cold Shooting Dooms Cougars At Springfield, 51-38

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – Host Springfield College held Clark University to a frigid 15 percent shooting from the field, allowed just nine made baskets and the Pride won its seventh straight game with a 51-38 win over the Cougars on Saturday in Blake Arena in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Springfield improves to 8-3 overall - their best start since the 2004-05 team also began the season 8-3. Clark, meanwhile, drops to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.

In a game that had no double figure scorers, the Pride's Tamara Tribble (White Plains, N.Y.) might have been the most effective player, finishing with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Danielle Racette (North Adams, Mass.), Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) each had a team-high eight points for Springfield.

Clark began the game on a 4-0 run until Racette got Springfield on the board with two free throws 2:19 into the game, sparking a 9-0 run, until a jumper by Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) pulled Clark within three points.

Both teams went scoreless for 6:16 until Racette knocked down two free throws with 2:02 left in the half to put the Pride up 18-12.

Springfield led by as much as nine before halftime as Tribble gave the Pride a 22-14 lead in the final minute of the half and Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) tacked on a free throw to take a 23-14 lead into the locker room.

Lewis got things started for Springfield in the second half, coming down with an offensive rebound and putting it right back into the basket for a 25-14 lead.

The Pride took its first double-digit lead of the game at 29-18 on a basket by Lewis in the paint with 13:48 left in the half. Springfield led 29-18.

Clark's Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) drained a three-pointer at 13:20 to make it a 29-21 game, but the Pride went on to hold the Cougars scoreless for the next 6:03, until Condon hit a free throw at 7:17.

Springfield took a 20-point lead, its biggest lead of the game off a three-pointer by Riley Fake (Brockport, N.Y.) with 5:11 left to play.

The Cougars would come within nine points after two free throws by Gwyneth Ivory (Ashland, Mass.) with under two minutes left on the clock, but the Pride closed out the game on a 6-2 run for the conference win.

Jaime Bickelhaupt finished the game with eight rebounds and six points for the Pride, while Windwer added six points.

Clark was led by Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) with a team-high eight points. Esther Cohn (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added seven points and seven rebounds and Emily Reilly (Marlborough, Mass.) finished the day with six points.

The Cougars, who have lost five of their last six games, returns to the hardwood on Thursday with a home contest against Wellesley. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
