Cougars Rally, Stun Wellesley For First Time Since 2004

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – The two-headed monster of Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) combined for 29 kills and 31 digs and host Clark University rallied for a thrilling 3-2 win over Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Tuesday night inside a raucous Kneller Athletic Center.

The win for the Cougars snaps an 11-match losing streak to the Blue that dated back to 2004. It also avenges a pair of losses in the quarterfinal round of the league tournament in 2010 and 2013.

Clark (8-12, 2-5 NEWMAC) actually came of firing registering 13 kills in the opening set en route to a 25-20 win.

Wellesley (11-7, 3-4 NEWMAC) responded in kind as they dominated the second set, leading by as many as 13 points while hitting a match-high .389 on their way to an impressive 25-12 win. Brooke Fieldman (Greenwood Village, Colo.) was the catalyst in that set, hammering down four kills on only six attacks. Meanwhile, the Cougars struggled to find the offensive rhythm they had in the first set as they committed eight hitting errors.

The third set was more of the same for the Blue as they collected 11 kills, including five more from Fieldman and four from Caitlin Laughlin (Saint Louis Park, Minn.) as they seized control of the match with a 25-17 win. Wellesley had their best defensive set of the match by far, corralling 19 digs and posting a pair of blocks to take a 2-1 lead.

Clark returned to first set form, however, in the fourth with Ramos (8) and Glass-Smythe (4) totaling 12 kills and setter Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) handing out 11 assists in the 25-23 win. The set was tied at 14-14 when Savonnah Rowe (New York, N.Y.) and Ramos combined to block a Sydney Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) attack, giving the Scarlet and White the lead. That advantage was gone when Carfagno put down a kill, making the score 23-23 but Ramos smashed down back-to-back kills to give the win and knot the game at 2-2.

The fifth set was all Clark as the Cougars raced out to a 5-1 lead with Glass-Smythe registering a pair of service aces that put her in the school's all-time top ten with 104 and Courtney Pharr (Seattle, Wash.) added a kill. Consecutive kills from Rowe had the Scarlet and White in total command, at 10-3 but Wellesley didn't go quietly as they crept to 12-7 following a Cougar miscue.

In the end however, Clark kept its postseason hopes alive with the 15-9 win.

Fieldman was strong in defeat for the Blue, finishing with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Laughlin added 14 kills on a hot .480 hitting.

Maddie Koh (Seattle, Wash.) dished out 37 assists and had 16 digs and Carfagno chipped in with nine kills and 12 digs.

Ramos notched her ninth double-double of the season with a match-high 17 kills and 17 digs. Glass-Smythe was just as impressive, recording 12 kills and 14 digs.

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday as they host a tri-match that features Fairleigh Dickinson and Southern Maine.

Clark, meanwhile, is off until next Tuesday when they visit Wheaton College for a crucial NEWMAC match.
