Box Score Wellesley, Mass. - Maddie Carlborg came off the bench and scored a goal in each half to power Wellesley College to a 2-0 win ove visiting Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon at the Wellesley Athletic Fields Complex.
With the win, the Blue improve to 8-7-2 overall and to 2-5 in the conference. Clark, meanwhile, coming off of their stunning upset over league-leading Babson on Saturday, drops to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in NEWMAC play.
Wellesley got on the board in the first half when Carlborg registered her first collegiate marker on an assist from Melise Knowles at 28:19.
Early in the second half it looked like the Blue would double their advantage but Darlene Dang saw her curving shot bang off the right post.
The second goal did come, however, and it was in the form of an excellent cross delivered from Mary Lou Ferguson to a sprinting Carlborg who volleyed it into the net to make the score 2-0 at 64:06.
Wellesley held a commanding edge in shots 22-0 and in corner kicks. They used a pair of goalkeepers – Claire Cerda and Kat Goldsmith, while Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) totaled seven saves for Clark, her 13th game this season with five or more stops.
The Scarlet and White will return to action on Saturday when they honor seniors Elizabeth Gomes (Arlington, Mass.) and Charlotte Mays (Melrose, Mass.) and put the spotlight on cancer awareness in their Think Pink Game against Wheaton. First touch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
