Worcester, Mass. – The Clark University women's swimming and diving team opened up the 2014-15 season in style, posting an impressive 187-87 win over Gordon College in a non-league dual meet at the Kneller Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Lydia Berry (Kennebunk, Maine), Natalie Omary (New York, N.Y.), Melissa Orzechowski (Windsor, Conn.) and Karina Urquhart (Sanford, Maine) all won multiple events as the Scarlet and White cruised to victory.
Berry took top honors in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:03.46) ahead of teammate Hannah Reich (Danvers, Mass.). She then touched the wall first in an extremely close 500-yard freestyle with Gordon's Nicole St. Martin.
Omary was first in the 50-yard butterfly (29.67) just ahead of teammate Liz Barker (Augusta, Maine), took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.80) and was first in the 50-yard breaststroke as well (34.86).
Orzechowski, who also won three events for Clark, took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.26), edged out teammate Kelsey Clary (Cambridge, Mass.) in the 50-yard freestyle before wrapping up her afternoon with another first-place effort – this time ahead of Barker in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.41).
Urquhart, meanwhile, was very strong in her first performance, posting first place finishes in the 200-yard IM (2:23.65) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.11).
Clary broke through to get a win in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.66), while the 200-yard medley relay foursome of Barker, Omary, Urquhart and Clary breezed to a first place showing as well (1:53.15).
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they visit Babson for a dual meet that begins at 1:00 p.m.
