Worcester, Mass. – In a hotly-contested match that featured tiebreakers in five of the nine overall matches, Assumption College edged a hard-charging Clark University squad, 6-3, in non-league men's tennis action on Friday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
The win for the Greyhounds evens their record at 1-1, while the Cougars are now 2-1.
Assumption won all three doubles matches but only by a combined nine points. Chris Waung and Viljami Rahnasto teamed up to knock off Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio), 8-5, at No. 1 and then Christian Zuber and Marco Leung moved past Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.), 8-4, at No. 2.
Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) and Scott Cabell (West Hartford, Conn.) battled back and forth with Tom Knight and Jakob Zyiak, but in the end they dropped a 9-7 tiebreaker at No. 3.
The Cougars finally got on board during singles play beginning with Pinkney squeaking past Zuber, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 3 and Goodstein taking a hard fought 5-7, 7-6 (10-1) three-set affair at No. 4.
Burger kept it rolling for the Scarlet and White with his 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 triumph over Zyiak at No. 5.
In the end however, the Greyhounds proved to be too much as they posted straight set wins at No. 1 with Waung breezing past Stein (6-3, 6-1) and Leung easily getting by Pinoargote (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2.
Knight wrapped up the match with a marathon 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) at No. 6.
