Box Score New London, Conn. – Andrew Musler (Belmont, Mass.) led a quartet of players in double figures and Clark University registered a season-high in points scored, roaring past Connecticut College, 87-80, in non-league men's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
The win for the Cougars snaps their three-game losing streak, sending their overall record to 3-4, while the host Camels now sit at 2-3.
Clark's victory is even more impressive when you consider their matchup with Connecticut College is their second game in as many nights and is the middle contest of a three games in four night stretch.
The Scarlet and White led by as many as 15 points late in the first half at 40-25 after Musler scored inside off a Lucas LaLima (Colts Neck, N.J.) feed with less than four minutes to play.
By the time halftime rolled around, however, Connecticut College had their deficit down to ten and less than six minutes into the second stanza, the Camels were ahead, 55-53, capping a 30-13 spurt over a nine minute span.
Nicholas DaPrato (Marshfield, Mass.) put Clark back on top with a triple at 58-55, but Connecticut College moved ahead again and led 70-64 after a Lee Messier (Narragansett, R.I.) jumper with 6:35 to go.
Clark made a push to tie the game with David Mercier (Milford, Mass.) scoring inside, making two free throws and then getting two more from the charity stripe from Musler.
Moments later, Musler put the Cougars ahead with a straight on three-pointer, making the score 73-70 with a little more than five minutes to play.
After Vuk Baletic (Belgrade, Serbia) dropped in a long baseline jumper to give Clark a 76-72 lead, a few empty possessions saw the ball back in the Cougars' hands with only two seconds left on the shot clock. Atkinson found Musler off the inbounds play for a right side triple that bumped the Scarlet and White edge to 79-72 with under three minutes to go.
Despite a three-point play from Colin Pascoe (Somers, Conn.) and a three-pointer from Bo McKinley (Westport, N.Y.), Clark went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:17 to seal the win.
The Cougars shot 49 percent from the field (29-for-59) for the contest and had 22 assists attached to their 29 baskets.
Clark held a 27-18 edge in bench points and a 24-16 advantage in points in the paint. The Camels, meanwhile, used a 40-31 bulge in rebounds to help them outscore the Cougars, 30-11 in second chance points.
McKinley led all scorers with 26 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Messier added 15 and Isaiah Robinson (Lynn, Mass.) just missed out on a double-double with nine points and ten boards.
Musler finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, while DaPrato chipped in with 18 points and Mercier added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. Along with Baletic, who netted a career-best ten points, that foursome combined to shoot 22-for-36 from the field.
The Cougars will wrap up their difficult three-game stretch on Thursday when they visit Worcester-city rival Becker College.
Connecticut College will return to the hardwood on Friday when they take part in their own tournament against Saint Joseph's (Brooklyn) at 8:00 p.m.
