Box Score Las Vegas, Nev. – Hanover (Ind.) College scored the game's final four points from the free throw line in the last minute of play and the Panthers edged out Clark University, 49-45, in non-league men's basketball action at South Point Arena in the final game of the D3Hoops.com Classic.
With the score 46-45 in favor of Hanover, Tyler Huffman (West Hartford, Conn.) saw his potential go-ahead running floater go halfway down and rattle out with less than three seconds to play. Wes McKinney would then go on to make three of his four free throws over the next two possessions to seal the win for the Panthers (6-5).
The Scarlet and White actually opened the game up hitting on all cylinders, racing out to a 10-2 edge less than three minutes into the game. Long scoring droughts, however, soon ensued and they found themselves down, 28-24 at halftime.
Things started off slow in the final 20 minutes as Clark only mustered a free throw in the first five minutes and when V.J. Billups connected on a baseline jumper, the Panthers were ahead 39-27 with less than 13 minutes to play.
Another Billups score had the Cougars down eight at 43-35 with a little more than six minutes to play but Clark woke up and scored ten of the next 12 points highlighted by a Nicholas DaPrato (Marshfield, Mass.) three-pointer, an Andrew Musler (Belmont, Mass.) inside hoop and two free throws from Musler.
Down 45-44, DaPrato had a chance to put Clark ahead moments later but his three-point try was off, leading to a fast break opportunity for Hanover. McKinney was on the attack but Lucas LaLima (Colts Neck, N.J.) beat him to the spot and forced an offensive foul.
On Cougars' next possession, LaLima went hard to the basket drawing the foul and when he split the two free throws, the game was tied at 45 with less than two minutes to play.
Hanover's offense became stagnant on the ensuing trip down the floor and as the shot clock wound down, a scramble for the ball ensued. When the dust cleared the Panthers had a new possession which led to Ethan Black splitting two free throws, giving Hanover a 46-45 lead with 30 seconds to play – an advantage they would not relinquish.
Normally an excellent free throw shooting team, the Scarlet and White struggled from the charity stripe, connecting on just 56 percent (9-for-16) and made only 33 percent of their field goal attempts (14-for-42).
DaPrato was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 19 points in the Cougars' win over Colorado College on Sunday night and then finishing with a game-high 14 tonight to go along with four rebounds and five assists.
Musler chipped in with 13 points for the Cougars, while David Mercier (Milford, Mass.) added ten points of his own.
Clark (5-6) is now off until Wednesday when they open up New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action with a home contest against MIT.
