Lyons Cruise Past Clark, 76-56

Norton, Mass.Kiley Shoemaker posted her eighth double-double of the season collecting 26 points and 19 rebounds, both career-highs, to guide host Wheaton over Clark University, 76-56, on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action.

The win for the Lyons gives them their first season sweep over the Cougars since 2009-10 and improves their record to a sparkling 16-4 overall and 11-4 in conference play.

Shoemaker fell two rebounds shy of tying the single-game rebounding record which is shared by Ann Zarchen Knoblock '81 and junior Abbie Brickley. In this contest, Brickley added 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals, while sophomore guard Rebecca Arnone compiled 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

The Lyons raced out to an 11-1 lead 4:19 after the opening tip-off as Arnone notched five points, junior guard Kirsten Ferrari produced four points and Shoemaker put home a layup at the 16:25 mark. Wheaton led by as many as 16 points (27-11) with 9:25 remaining in the first half before the hosts headed into the break with a 36-24 advantage.  

In the second half, the Lyons went on an 8-0 run to begin the stanza scoring half of their points in transition. Wheaton outscored Clark, 12-6, in the category tallying six fast break points in each half. The Lyons largest lead of the game (23 points, 55-32) came with 14:05 left to play in the contest.  

Clark received double-digit efforts from Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) and Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.). Brennan totaled 11 points and Condon contributed ten points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) also chipped in with nine points, three boards and three assists.

Wheaton shot 43.5-percent (27-for-62) from the field, held a 50-38 advantage on the glass and a 42-20 margin in points in the paint. Clark connected on 29.7-percent (19-for-64) of its field goal attempts, registered a 12-9 differential in second chance points and rejected six shots.

Clark (8-12, 5-10 NEWMAC) will look to snap its three-game losing streak when it welcomes Springfield College to the Kneller Athletic Center next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
