Schenectady, N.Y. – Visiting Clark University opened up the spring portion of its 2014 season with a resounding 8-1 win over host Union College in non-league men's tennis action held at the Sportime Tennis Facility on Friday evening.
The Dutchmen slip to 1-3 on the season while the Cougars improve to 2-0 for the second consecutive season.
Clark came out strong in doubles action taking two of the three matches led by Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) topping Spencer Fontein and Anthony Laurencio 8-4 at No. 2.
Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Phillip Porter (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) then teamed up for the first time ever and rolled past Mike Donadio and Brendan Conry 8-3 at No. 3.
Union's lone victory came at No. 1 doubles where Grant Zaccareo and T.J. Moor knocked off Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador), 8-4.
The Cougars took control of the match in singles play as four of their six victories came in straight sets. Stein took down Moor at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4 and Pinkney dispatched of Laurencio, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.
Also winning in straight sets were Pinoargote at No. 4 as he defeated Fontein 6-3, 6-3 and Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.), who tripped up Donadio 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5.
Martin, meanwhile, dropped the first set of his match with Zaccareo at No. 2, 6-3, before rallying to win in three sets, taking the second, 6-3 and the third set 10-5.
The match of the day however, was between the Dutchmen's David Brown and the Clark's Spencer Brightman (Sudbury, Mass.). Brightman took the first set, 6-3 but Brown responded with relative ease, taking the second, 6-1. The third set was a marathon but Brightman eventually came out on top, 13-11.
Clark will waste little time before their next match. They will face Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
