Box Score Boston, Mass. – Clark University saw its three-game winning streak come to a screeching halt as host Emerson College raced to an 89-59 win over the Cougars in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Brown-Plofker Gymnasium.
The loss deals a serious blow to Clark's postseason hopes as they now slip to 3-7 in league play – two full games behind these very same Lions for the fifth and final spot in the upcoming league tournament. When you combine Emerson's series sweep of the Cougars with their two game lead in the conference standings, the Scarlet and White are essentially three games behind the Lions with four games left to play.
Emerson rattled off 13 of the game's first 18 points and never looked back leading by as many as 34 in the waning seconds of the contest.
The Lions shot a sizzling 58 percent from the field (29-for-50) and after shooting 1-for-20 from behind the arc in the two teams' first matchup back in January, Emerson connected on a season-best 10-of-19 triples in today's contest.
Clark, meanwhile, struggled offensively all afternoon, shooting just 29 percent from the field and going just seven for 25 from behind the arc. The league's best free throw shooting team coming into the contest, the Cougars made a season-low 63 percent from the charity stripe (18-for-28).
Down by 18 at the half, Clark scored the first six points of the second stanza as Lucas LaLima (Colts Neck, N.J.) went coast-to-coast for an inside hoop and David Mercier (Milford, Mass.) made a pair of free throws and scored inside off of a LaLima feed.
Nine minutes later and even after an Andrew Musler (Belmont, Mass.) three-pointer, the Cougars were still down 58-44 with a little more than seven minutes left to play.
That's when the Lions stepped on the gas and went on a 22-6 run that made the score 80-50 with less than three minutes to play.
Michael Thorpe led all scorers with 25 points and five assists on 8-for-10 shooting, while Jon Goldberg added 12 points, 14 rebounds and five assists of his own.
Clark was led by Musler who notched another double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. Nicholas DaPrato (Marshfield, Mass.) was the only other Cougar in double figures with ten points, while Joseph Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) chipped in with three points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench.
The Cougars (12-9) will look to return to the win column on Wednesday with a road trip to Wheaton College. That game is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m.
