Hopewell Junction, N.Y. – For the first time in 16 matches Clark University was held without a point – albeit this time in a shortened match – as the Cougars fell to Vassar College, 5-0 in non-league men's tennis action on Saturday evening.
The win for the Brewers who earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament a season ago, improves their ledger to 3-0 on the season, while the Cougars drop their first match of the year and now sit at 2-1.
Vassar opened up the match with a doubles sweep, led by Daniel Cooper and Evan Udine taking No. 1 doubles over Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador), 8-2.
Nick Litsky and Sha Huang eventually earned the win at No. 3, topping Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Phillip Porter (Cortland Manor, N.Y.), 8-3.
Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) had the best chance at getting a win for the Cougars, but they were edged out by Christian Phelps and Christian Lyon, 9-7, at No. 2.
Only two of the singles matches were finished and it was enough to clinch the win for Vassar. Pinkney dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Phelps, while Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) fell victim to Alexander Luckmann at No. 6, 6-4, 6-2.
Clark is now off until Sunday, March 2 when they play two matches on their Spring Break trip. The first will be against King's College (Pa.) and the other against Trine University. Times are still to be determined.
