Bearcats Rally For 7-6 Win Over Cougars

Box Score

Winter Haven, Fla. – Saint Vincent's College rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Bearcats held on for a 7-6 win over Clark University in non-league baseball action on Sunday morning at Chain O'Lakes Field.

Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) had a big day for the Cougars, going 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI, but the Bearcats' Jordan Britcher drove in three runs of his own and Tyler Frankel earned the win in relief.

Britcher, who drove in the team's first run of the day earlier in the game, singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, with SVC down by two, 6-4. As the throw headed to the plate, Britcher took off for second. Britcher's slide knocked the ball out of the shortstop's glove and into shallow left field, allowing Tanner Master to score what would prove to be the winning run.

The Cougars took the early lead with an Eglow double in the first inning that plated Nicholas O'Brien (Potomac, Md.).

Saint Vincent fired back with three runs in the bottom of the second. Jon White led off with a hit batsman, and stole second with two out. Britcher then drove him home with a single to left. A wild pitch moved Britcher into scoring position, and Geo Muzika singled to right to give SVC a 2-1 lead. AJ Kavinsky and Vince Murphy then walked to load the bases, and Ben Webb drew an RBI walk that scored Muzika to make it 3-1 after just two innings.

Clark made it a one-run game, tallying an unearned run off Bearcat starter Joey Fearer in the third.

In the top of the fourth, Jack Kenney (Saco, Maine) had an RBI single to tie the game, chasing Fearer. Frankel then yielded a two-run double to Eglow, making the score 5-3.

Saint Vincent got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Britcher led off with a walk, then moved to second on a groundout by Kavinsky. Murphy then hit a ground ball to the second baseman. Murphy used his speed to beat the throw for an infield single, while Britcher never stopped after making the turn at third, scoring from second on the infield single to make the score 5-4.

After Clark added a run in the top of the sixth on an Eglow sacrifice fly, SVC stormed back in the seventh. James Loftis drew a walk to lead off and then advanced to second on a balk. Winkler walked and then both runners moved up 90 feet on a single to left by Master, which set up Britcher's game-winner.

Michael Mainuli (Glastonbury, Conn.) was effective in his first start of the season, going six innings and striking out six while yielding four earned runs.

Freshman Joseph Gouveia (Nashua, N.H.) tossed an inning of hitless relief with two strikeouts for the Cougars. Saul Ramirez (New York, N.Y.) took the loss, giving up three runs on two hits in just an inning of work.

Clark will look to break into the win column on Monday when they play two against the Milwaukee School of Engineering. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
