Late Inning Uprising Sends No. 24 Lyons Past Clark, 9-1

Box Score

Norton, Mass. – No. 24 Wheaton College erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning and the host Lyons posted a 9-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action at Sidell Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The win for Wheaton moves their overall record to 8-5-1 and gives them their first conference win of the season (1-2). Clark meanwhile, sees its ledger dip to 4-10 and 1-2 in league games following their 14th straight loss to the Lyons.

Starting pitcher Michael Mainuli (Glastonbury, Conn.) actually fared will to begin the game after giving up a run in the bottom of the second.

Clark evened the game at 1-1 when Nicholas O'Brien (Potomac, Md.) singled down the left field line, scoring Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.), who had walked earlier in the frame.

Mainuli and Wheaton starter Mike Gibbons both continued to pitch effectively and it looked as if the Cougars might take the lead in the top of the seventh. David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) walked to open the inning and then Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) sacrificed him over to second. James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) followed that with a single up the middle but Eschen was thrown out at the plate by centerfielder Jimmy Smith.

The Lyons took advantage of their good fortune in the bottom of the frame when they sent 13 batters to the plate and faced five different Clark pitchers. When the dust cleared Wheaton had pushed seven runs across on just three hits – the biggest blow being a two-run single to center by No. 7 hitter Justin Peluso.

After reliever Mike Bisceglia retired the next three Clark batters in the top of the eighth, Peluso tacked on another run for the hosts with an RBI single to center of off Joseph Gouveia (Nashua, N.H.).

Ryan Grant, one of the nation's elite closers, came in and finished off the Scarlet and White lineup with three consecutive groundouts on six total pitches.

Bisceglia (2-0) picked up the win after tossing 1.1 innings of hitless and scoreless relief and went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.

The Cougar offense – coming off of being no-hit on Saturday - mustered only three hits on the day. Mainuli took the loss despite pitching well, going six innings, yielding six hits and two earned runs.

Clark will continue its busy week with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch against Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Friday.
