Orlando, Fla. – Clark Univeristy continued its strong showing in the Sunshine State with a convincing 7-2 win over Moravian College in non-league men's tennis action on Tuesday morning at the Lake Crane Tennis Center.
With the win the streaking Cougars improve to 5-1 on the season and have now won three straight since dropping a 5-0 match-shortened decision to Vassar College back in early February.
The Scarlet and White opened up doubles action with a pair of victories led by Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) and Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) sneaking past Mike Antonis and Lewis Cooper, 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. Spencer Brightman (Sudbury, Mass.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) then topped Giovanni Lombardi and C.J. Widdifield, at No. 3, by the same 9-7 score.
The Greyhounds did get a win at No. 1 doubles behind Matt Tuorto and John Wylie as they defeated Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio), 8-5.
Stein avenged his doubles loss with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Wylie at No. 1 singles, while Pinoargote finished off Lombardi with the exact same score at No. 4.
Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) breezed past Dan Schmucker, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 but Moravian picked up a win at No. 5 where Antonis outlasted Goodstein in a marathon three-set match. He took the first set 6-1, but Goodstein rallied for a 7-6 (3) win in the second. Antonis then took the third set 10-6 for the Greyhounds.
Meanwhile, Pinkney was wrapped in a marathon match of his own as his straight set decision over Cooper at No. 3 went to a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (7-2) and 7-6 (7-5).
Clark will have a few hours off before they head across the city to face an undefeated Coe College team that sports a 9-0 record.
