Sanford, Fla. – Clark University saw its five match winning streak snapped as Ohio Northern won two of three doubles matches to edge out the surging Cougars, 5-4, in non-league men's tennis action on Wednesday evening at Lake Sylvan Park.
The loss for the Scarlet and White sends them back North with a 7-2 overall record, while the Polar Bears move to 4-2 on the season.
After Josh Saunders and John Mostowy defeated Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), 8-6 at No. 1, Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) moved past Sam Prewitt and Alex Starr, 8-6 at No. 3.
ONU went into singles action ahead, 2-1, courtesy of a triumph at No. 2 doubles where Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecaudor) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) were clipped in a tiebreaker, 9-8, by Blake Troller and Do Thai.
Prewitt got past Goodstein in straight sets at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3 to begin singles play and that was followed by Mostowy knocking off Pinkney 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
Stein tried to swing momentum back in Clark's favor with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Saunders at No. 1, but Thai, who just won his 100th career match earlier in the week, registered a 6-1, 7-5 win over Martin at No. 2.
Pinoargote posted a three-set win at No. 4 over Troller, taking the first set 6-3, before falling 3-6 and rallying for a 6-1 third set victory.
