Lyons Power Past Cougars, 16-2

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – The Wheaton College offense erupted for season highs in both runs scored (16) and hits (18) and the visiting Lyons used a pair of huge innings to post a convincing 16-2 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Granger Field.

Five different Wheaton relievers combined with starter Mike Gibbons to handcuff the Cougar offense. Gibbons, who defeated Clark a week ago in Norton, tossed five innings, allowing just three hits while striking out two batters.

Offensively, six Lyons batters had at least two RBI while eight of the nine starters had a hit. Ryan Silvestro had a huge day for the visitors, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Matt Lavanchy went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

After getting single runs in the first and second, Wheaton pushed four runs across in the fifth beginning with Lavanchy's triple to right that scored Justin Peluso. Lavancy scored on a wild pitch and then Silvestro smacked an RBI double to right and Kevin Foley added a run scoring single to left.

That uprising chased Clark starter Casey Marvell (Niskayuna, N.Y.), who went five innings, allowing ten hits and six earned runs.

Wheaton added two more runs in the sixth off of reliever Austin Knief (Scarsdale, N.Y.) starting with Lavanchy's sacrifice fly to left and an Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I.) RBI single.

Down 8-0, Clark got on the board in the seventh when David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) singled to left and then came around to score on a James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) base hit to right.

A single run came across in the eighth for the Lyons on a Justin Peluso RBI single, making the score, 9-1.

Wheaton then tacked on seven runs in the top of the ninth as they sent 12 batters to the plate with huge hits coming courtesy of a Silvestro two-run triple to deep center, a Stefan Sunda two-run double down the left field line and a Mike Beneduce two-run double.

Clark got a second run in the ninth off of relieve Ryan Grant when Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Cougars (4-14, 1-5 NEWMAC) collected seven hits on the day, led by Eschen's 2-for-4 performance.

Clark will return to the diamond on Friday when they begin a three-game series with league rival WPI beginning at 3:30 p.m. Wheaton (13-6-1, 4-2 NEWMAC), meanwhile, travels to Endicott on Thursday for key non-league matchup.
