Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Babson College opened up the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) portion of their schedule with a hard fought 6-3 win over Clark University on sun-splashed Corash Tennis Courts.
The Beavers evened their record at 4-4, while the Scarlet and White have now dropped two straight matches to slip to 8-4.
In doubles action, where Babson won two of the three matches, Roberto Perez (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) and Victor Vu (Los Angeles, Calif.) came out and knocked off Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), 8-4, at No. 1. Their other doubles win came at No. 3 as Saif Rahim (Hong Kong) and Isaac Thylen (Surfside, Fla.) edged Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.), 8-5.
Clark avoided a doubles sweep when Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) were able to get past Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) and Connor DiFiore (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), 8-5, at No. 2.
Things continued in the Green and White's favor in singles action beginning with Perez topping Stein, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 and Vu bested Martin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Thylen followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Pinkney at No. 3, while Rahim wrapped up the Beaver victories with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) at No. 6.
Clark won a pair of marathon singles matches beginning with Goodstein's triumph over DeFiore at No. 5. He dropped the first set, 6-2, before rallying to take the second 7-5 set and finally the third, 12-10.
Pinoargote fell to Doyley in the first set, 6-4, but came back strong to take a 6-1 win in the second. He completed the win when Doyley retired in the third set with Pinoargote ahead, 4-2.
Clark continues play during its busy week with another league matchup, playing host to Emerson at 4:00 p.m. Babson, meanwhile, will return to the courts on Thursday with a non-league affair with Brandeis.
