Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Clark University got a pair of incredible pitching performances from Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.) and Miles Sheehan (Madison, Conn.) but the Cougars managed just a split with New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Springfield College on Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.
The Scarlet and White rolled to victory in the opener behind Dubois, posting a 9-0 win but Clark dropped a 3-2 decision in the nightcap despite another strong outing on the mound from Sheehan.
With the split, the Cougars now stand at 7-18 overall and 4-9 in league contests, while the Pride, who took two of three in the series, improves to 11-10 but more importantly are now 5-7 – a game and a half ahead of Clark in the NEWMAC's West Division standings.
Game 1: Clark 9, Springfield 0
Dubois was masterful in the opener, scattering eight hits in tossing a complete game shutout. He threw just 101 pitches – 69 of which were strikes.
At the plate, Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) was equally as effective going 3-for-5 with a homerun, two doubles and five RBI.
Clark broke open a scoreless game in the third when they pushed four runs across, highlighted by a Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) RBI single and a two-run double from Asdornvuttikrai.
The Cougars were back at it in the fourth when three straight singles by Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.), Nicholas O'Brien (Potomac, Md.) and Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was followed up by a Lima sacrifice fly to left.
Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) added another run in the seventh when he sent Asdornvuttikrai home after he doubled to lead off the inning.
Asdornvuttikrai then delivered a big blow in the eighth, when he crushed a three-run homer to left field that scored both James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) and Richall both who reached earlier in the inning on singles to left.
Dubois, meanwhile, was in total control, walking two and striking out three to improve to 4-2.
Brett Poulin and Billy Paskowski were the only Springfield players to collect more than one hit as they both had two.
In addition to Asdornvuttikrai, every starter had at least one hit led by Richall who had three.
Game 2: Springfield 3, Clark 2 (10 innings)
Sheehan went all ten innings for the Cougars, striking out 11 while throwing 124 pitches. The game was tied 2-2 going into the tenth when the Pride pushed across the go ahead run. A leadoff single by Shane O'Leary was followed by Ryan Gower moving him into scoring position with a sacrifice. He went to third on a wild pitch, but Sheehan was able to get Steve Starr to flyout to center. Billy Peterson, however, brought home the game-winning run with a single to left.
Sheehan started the game out on fire retiring the first six batters he faced, four of which were via the strikeout.
Springfield did take a 1-0 lead in the third when Starr singled to center sending home Poulin, who led off the inning with a single.
Clark got the run back in the bottom of the frame when a Conway groundout with the bases loaded evened the score.
Sheehan then sat down eight straight batters until a Peterson triple to center was followed by an Adam Zandri RBI basehit.
As they did in the third the Cougars answered back with a run to tie the score. This time the run came courtesy of a Conway solo shot to left – his second roundtripper of the week.
Clark had an excellent chance to take the lead in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out after singles by Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) and Chochrek and a walk by O'Brien. Peter Baranski, however, came in to retire the next two batters without giving up a run, setting the stage a few innings later for the game-winning run.
Baranski was superb out of the Pride bullpen, tossing 3.2 innings of hitless relief to earn the win.
Of the 12 combined hits in the game, only Springfield's Peterson had more than one (2-for-4).
Both teams are back in action on Sunday. The Pride travels to Emerson for a 3:00 p.m. start, while the Cougars step out of conference for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against Bates.
