Clark Downed By Bates, 11-1

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Bates College scored 11 unanswered runs and a quartet of four relievers allowed just three hits in four innings of work and the visiting Bobcats registered an 11-1 non-league baseball win over Clark University on Sunday afternoon at Granger Field.

The win for Bates evens their record at 9-9, while the Cougars have now dropped three of their last four games to fall to 7-19.

Playing for the first time in a week, the Bobcats banged out 13 hits with Kevin Davis (North Andover, Mass.) leading the way with a 3-for-5 day with three runs scored.

Clark actually opened the day taking a 1-0 lead in the first when Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) and James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) singled and Hutchinson scored on an infield error.

The Cougars had an excellent chance to widen the gap in the third when Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) notched an infield single, Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) had a single up the middle and Conway singled to left. Bates starter Brad Reynolds (Lafayette, Colo.), however, worked out of trouble by striking out Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) and getting Jack Kenney (Saco, Maine) on a force out to end the threat.

The Bobcats took advantage in the fourth when Steve Burke (Bedford, N.H.) reached on an error and he then moved to third on a Davis double down the right field line. Those two runners came around to score on a Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) infield single and a Berto Diaz (Carson, Calif.) sacrifice.

Bates added four more runs in the fifth when they had four hits highlighted by a Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) RBI single. Two runs then came across on an error and Jackson crossed the dish on a wild pitch, making the score 6-1.

Three more runs were added in the seventh when the Bobcats loaded the bases against Saul Ramirez (New York, N.Y.) on a Davis single and a pair of hit batsmen. A third HBP pushed the first run across and after Kai Glick (New York, N.Y.) relieved Ramirez, he induced a double play but another run scored. The final run of the inning came when Evan Czopek (Portland, Ore.) doubled to right scoring pinch runner Sam Warren.

Bates added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth when John Dinucci (West Hartford, Conn.) scored from first on a Czopek double and then Czopek scored on a Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) two-base hit to right center.

Casey Marvell (Niskayuna, N.Y.) took the loss for the Cougars despite pitching pretty effectively. He went six innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, only one of which was earned.

Reynolds, meanwhile, improved to 3-1 on the season, tossing five strong innings, scattering six hits, yielding just one unearned run and fanning six.

The foursome of Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.), Anthony Telesca (Holtsville, N.Y.), Dean Bonneau (Amherst, Mass.) and Aidan Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) shut down the Clark bats, allowing just three hits over the final four innings.

In addition to Davis' three hits, Czopek had two doubles, while both Jackson and Tewksbury each had two hits for the victors.

Conway continued his hot bat for Clark, going 3-for-4.

The Scarlet and White continue their five-game home stand on Tuesday when they host Babson, while the Bobcats return to the diamond on Monday with a doubleheader against Fisher College.
