Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Clark University raced out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back, topping visiting Coast Guard, 10-2 in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Friday afternoon at Granger Field.
The Cougars swiped seven bases, had seven hits and got another excellent performance on the mound from Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.), who went eight strong innings en route to his third consecutive win.
Clark snapped their three game losing streak and improved to 8-20 overall but because of Babson's 11-0 win over Emerson College, the Cougars have been eliminated from postseason contention for the fourth consecutive season.
Coast Guard, meanwhile, now stands at 11-18 overall and 6-9 in league contests with two games against NEWMAC opponents this season.
The Scarlet and White scored four runs in the top of the first highlighted by RBI singles by Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) and David Eschen (New York, N.Y.). Nicholas O'Brien (Potomac, Md.) scored the first run of the game when he was hit by a pitch and then stole second and third before scoring on an error.
Coast Guard got on the board in the fourth on a Dave Wolinski (Henrico, Va.) sacrifice fly that plated Mark Behne (Clifton, Va.) who led off the inning with a walk.
The Bears tacked on another run in the sixth when Kyle Wood (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) reached on an infield single and then stole second. He came home on a Lukas LaPlante (Leeds, Mass.) single to center.
Clark put away any thoughts of a comeback when they scored four runs on just one hit and two CGA errors in the seventh. Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had the lone hit in the frame, while Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) had the inning's RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.).
Two more insurance runs came in the eighth when James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Asdornvuttikrai drove in another with a single to left.
Colton Cannon (Kennesaw, Ga.) took the loss for the Bears, going 6.1 innings, giving up just four hits and five runs – none of which were earned.
Dubois went eight strong innings for the Cougars, allowing just six hits and two earned runs to improve to 5-2.
Wood and LaPlante had two hits each for Coast Guard, while Asdornvuttikrai went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Clark. O'Brien had an excellent day for Clark, going 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
The Cougars and Bears will continue their weekend series on Saturday with a twinbill beginning at 12:00 p.m.
