Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Becker College erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning and the visiting Hawks topped Worcester City rival Clark University, 8-5, in non-league baseball action on Tuesday afternoon on Granger Field.
The win for Becker pushes their overall record to 17-12, while the Cougars have now dropped six of their last seven to fall to 8-23.
Clark actually held a 1-0 lead heading into the game-changing inning after taking advantage of pair of Hawk errors in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Cougar hurler, Joseph Gouveia (Nashua, N.H.) was cruising along having yielded just two hits heading into the fifth when the Hawks sent ten batters to the plate and scored those seven runs on five hits. Big blows came courtesy of a Mike Marcello (West Haven, Conn.) two-run single and a Randall Minogue (North Kingstown, R.I.) two-run homer to centerfield.
Clark answered back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on a Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) double to center and a Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) two-run single to center.
Becker tacked on another run in the sixth on a Chris Flanders (Londonderry, N.H.) groundout that scored T.J. Sempkowski (Oceanport, N.J.), who led off the inning with a double off of reliever Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.).
The Cougars pushed a single run across in the bottom of the ninth when Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) scored on a Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) triple to left.
Gouveia shoulders the loss for the Scarlet and White, going 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs – only three of which were earned.
Jason Silbor (Uxbridge, Mass.) came in and tossed five innings of four-hit relief of starter Keon Jenkins (Nashua, N.H.) to earn the win.
Marcello and Sempkowski each had two hits for the Hawks, while Richall and Asdornvuttikrai each had two for the Cougars.
Becker will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Fitchburg State. Clark won't return to the diamond until Sunday when they travel to Roger Williams.
