Conway's Homer Highlights Cougars 10-6 Win At Babson

Box Score

Babson Park, Mass.—Clark University erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning and the visiting Cougars knocked off Babson College, 10-6, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Govoni Field.

With the loss, the Beavers slip below the .500 mark at 9-10 overall and are .500 in league play at 5-5. Losers in eight of their last nine games entering today, the Cougars improved to 6-16 and 3-7.

The hosts had four multiple hitters on the day, including first-year Jack Halpin's (Glastonbury, Conn.) 3-for-5 performance with a double.  Juniors Rob Caggiano (Medford, Mass.) and Chris Warren (Medfield, Mass.) and first-year Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.) each went 2-for-4.  Shea's afternoon included the game's lone triple, while Warren had a two-base knock.

Sophomore Nicholas O'Brien (Potomac, Md.) led Clark's 15-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with two runs.  Junior Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of doubles, classmate Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) recorded two hits and a pair of RBI, and sophomores James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) and Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had two hits each, including the first career homerun for Conway.

Babson junior hurler Barrett O'Neill (Ashland, Mass.) ran into trouble in the first, allowing two runs on a pair of hits and two walks. He was one batter away from escaping the inning unscathed before Asdornvuttikrai doubled to deep center to give the visitors the early lead.

Babson sliced into its two-run deficit in the second when first-year Joe Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) led off with a double to center and was later brought around on Shea's triple to right center.

Three straight singles, a stolen base, a wild pitch and an infield error in the third led to a trio of Beaver runs and a 4-2 advantage.  Junior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) had the lone RBI in the frame.  A two-out single down the right field line by Halpin in the fourth pushed Caggiano across while extending the Green and White lead to three.

The sixth inning proved to be all Clark, as the Cougars scored eight runs on seven hits and one defensive miscue.  Conway got things started with a leadoff solo homer over the left field fence.  Lima accounted for a two-run base knock, while Asdornvuttikrai, O'Brien and first-year Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) each had an RBI in the frame.

Graduate student Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.), who entered the game in the fourth, picked up the win in relief after fanning two batters and allowing two hits in 2 2/3 innings.  Sophomore Miles Sheehan (Madison, Conn.) earned the save after coming on in the eighth with the bases loaded and the tying run on deck.

First-year Ken Rotunno (East Islip, N.Y.) suffered the loss in relief, surrendering seven earned runs and eight hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Clark travels to league opponent Springfield College on Friday for a 3:30 p.m. start.
