Springfield, Mass. – Visiting Clark University won two of three doubles matches and then posted straight set wins at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles en route to a hard fought 6-3 win over New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars have now won back-to-back matches to improve to 11-5 and 2-1 in league action in advance of their key showdown with MIT on Saturday. Springfield, meanwhile slips to 6-6 overall and 0-4 in conference contests.
Things opened up with Tanner DeVarennes and Joe Giannelli knocking off Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.), 8-5, at No. 1.
Clark responded by winning at No. 2 courtesy of Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) taking down Justin Danielewicz and Kyle Beynor, 8-3 and Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) teaming up with Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) to cruise by Joshua Robinson and Nate Weissman, 8-2, at No. 3.
Stein won a three-set showdown with DeVarennes at No. 1. He dropped the first set 6-4 but rallied to win the second, 6-4 and the third 10-3.
Martin got little resistance from Danielwicz, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, while Goodstein pushed past Robinson, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Burger took down Weissman, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
