Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Zoe LaFrance-Armstrong (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) banged home the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in regulation and Clark University took a thrilling 3-2 win over Western New England in non-league field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Scarlet and White improve to 3-1 on the season while the Golden Bears even out at 2-2.
The goal for LaFrance-Armstrong capped a wild stretch that saw Western New England erase a 2-0 deficit and hold the Cougars without a shot until Kiah Murphy (Westport, Mass.) setup the go ahead marker with 1:57 left.
Clark took a 1-0 lead early in the first half when Isabelle Zoeckler (Madison, Conn.) found the back of the cage off of a feed from Madison Boardman (Cornish, N.H.) at 11:02.
Their advantage doubled when Maria Manning (Manchester, N.H.) scored on a penalty stroke at 30:01, sending the teams into intermission with a 2-0 edge.
That margin was sliced in half early in the second stanza when freshman Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) notched her team-leading fourth score of the year on a penalty corner.
Things stayed that way until late in the game when DeLima teamed up Hillary Naranjo-Mejia (Lowell, Mass.) for the equalizer at 64:06.
The game looked to be headed into extra time until Murphy's assist on LaFrance-Armstrong's second game-winner of the year.
As you might expect with a close contest, the stat sheet was close as well. Both teams had six overall shots but the Golden Bears held an 11-3 edge in penalty corners.
Olivia Landry (Vestal, N.Y.) made her first collegiate start in goal for the Cougars and made three saves to earn the win, while Renee Rossignol (Topsham, Maine) stopped three shot of her own but falls to 2-2.
Clark will return to action on Tuesday when they host UMass-Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
Western New England opens up Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Wednesday with a home tilt against Salve Regina.
