Clark Falls In League Opener, 4-0

Box Score

Northampton, Mass.—Jordan Houston scored a pair of goals and host Smith College posted a 4-0 shutout of Clark University in the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers, who are off to their best start in over a decade, improve to 3-1-1 while the Cougars slip to 0-7.

Houston, who scored a pair of goals against the Cougars a season ago including the game-winner in the 95th minute, got the hosts on the scoreboard just 19 minutes into the game when she converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.

Smith doubled their advantage less than a minute later when Vicki Kraft found Innis Hitt, who sent a shot that sailed past the outstretched arms of Scarlet and White netminder Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.).

Clark's best scoring chance came early in the second half when Charlotte Mays (Melrose, Mass.) fired a shot but was turned aside by Shelby Hall.

Houston continued her heroics with a fantastic score in the 72nd minute. She dribbled to the 18-yard box and fired a shot to the top left corner that found the back of the net, freezing Paolini for her fourth goal of the season.

The Pioneers added a fourth marker when Emily Smith beat the buzzer and scored with just five seconds remaining in the contest.

Paolini made three saves in net for Clark, who got outshot 22-8.

Clark returns to action on Tuesday when they begin a three-game homestand with a non-conference tilt against Western Connecticut State. First touch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
