Box Score New London, Conn. – Clark University was eight points away from their first win over Coast Guard Academy since 2009 but the host Bears stormed back and took a 3-2 win over the Cougars in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Saturday morning at Roland Field House. Game scores were 25-21, 25-27, 22-25, 25-21 and 15-10.
The Scarlet and White, ahead 2-1 found itself in excellent shape in the fourth set with a 17-11 advantage but CGA (8-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) ran off seven straight points to take an 18-17 lead they wouldn't relinquish en route to a 25-21 win, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
Clark never led in the fifth, dropping the set 15-10 after Coast Guard jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 10-4.
The Bears took the first set 25-21 but the Cougars roared back to take the second, 27-25 and the third 25-22.
Clark got huge performances from several individuals including a 27-kill, 22-dig performance from Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and a 14-kill, 24-dig effort from Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.).
In addition, Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) dished out a career-best 48 assists to go with 12 digs, while Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) added six kills and 19 digs.
Susan West paced the CGA attack with 19 kills and 11 digs while Michelle Hernandez had an excellent all-around showing with six kills, 15 assists and 12 digs.
Clark (4-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) will return to the court on Tuesday with a non-conference meeting at Johnson and Wales. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
