Worcester, Mass. – Clark University swept through the doubles matches and the host Cougars posted a strong 7-2 win over Union College in non-league men's tennis action on chilly Wednesday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
With the win the Scarlet and White improve to 2-0 in the fall portion of their season, while the Dutchmen, who have dropped matches to Clark in consecutive seasons, are now 0-1.
At No. 1 doubles, Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) edged out T.J. Moor (Natick, Mass.) and Spencer Fontein (Aurora, Ont.), 8-4, while Fernando Pinoargote (Guayquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) had no trouble with Grant Zaccareo (Montclair, N.J.) and David Brown (Tenafly, N.J.), topping them 8-2 at No. 2.
Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.) then completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Max Sandberg (Bloomfield, N.J.) and John Shanley (Attleboro, Mass.) at No. 3.
The Dutchmen got on the board in singles action when Moor knocked off Stein, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Sandberg battled by Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) in a three set thriller at No. 6. He won the first set 6-3, but fell 6-3 in the second before rallying to take the third, 10-4.
Other than that it was all Clark beginning with Martin getting his own three-set triumph at No. 2 over Zaccareo by the score of 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
Pinkney had the easiest time of anyone, breezing past Fontein, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, while Goodstein had little trouble with Brown at No. 4, moving past him, 6-2, 6-1.
Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) had a similarly easy time at No. 5 where he notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over John Kodera (Sudbury, Mass.).
Union is next back in action on Saturday when they host Vassar College in the Liberty League opener.
Clark, meanwhile, is off until next Friday, October 3 to begin a four match stretch where they play Assumption, Stonehill, Endicott and the University of Hartford in a two-week span.
