Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) hit a sizzling .455 on her way to a match-high 12 kills and host Clark University raced to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-14) win over Mount Holyoke in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball on Thursday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center.
With the win, the Cougars even out their record at 6-6 and 1-2 in league play, while the Lyons slip to 2-11 and 0-4 in conference contests.
The first set was tied 8-8 when the Scarlet and White ran off 12 of the next 14 points to take a 20-10 lead en route to a 25-13 win.
In the second set, Clark jumped out to 15-7 edge and held a 20-8 advantage as they hit .474 in the frame. They eventually wrapped up the set by getting a kill from Savonnah Rowe (New York, N.Y.) and then back-to-back kills from Glass-Smythe.
Mount Holyoke kept the third set close as Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) began to assert herself and after Sweeting kill, the score was 17-10. Another Sweeting kill and a setting error by Clark forced a timeout and made the score 24-18. The Cougars put the game away, however, when Rowe took a huge swing but gently tapped the ball into a vacated space for the match-sealing point.
In addition to Glass-Smythe, Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Rowe each had seven kills and Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) chipped in with 11 digs.
Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) handed out a match-high 21 assists in just two sets, while Jessica Hoops (East Hampton, Mass.) registered ten helpers in the third set alone.
Sweeting led the Lyon attack with ten kills, while Rebecca Bland (Durham, N.C.) added five of her own. Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va.) collected 12 assists and six digs for the visitors and both Susie Gardner (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and Kaleen Iwema (Wadsworth, Ill.) each totaled seven digs.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday. Mount Holyoke entertains Wheaton, while Clark hosts a tri-match with Babson and Amherst.
