Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Lindsay Duplessis (Rye, N.H.) converted a penalty kick in the game's 73rd minute and visiting Coast Guard Academy held on for a 1-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Friday night at the Granger Soccer Turf.
The win for the Bears pushes their overall record to 5-3-1 and 1-1 in conference contests, while the Cougars remain in search of their first victory (0-9, 0-2 NEWMAC).
Both teams had excellent scoring chances in the first half but neither could capitalize. The Cougars had two chances from point blank range inside the box in the game's first five minutes, but both times a Coast Guard defender was able to make the save.
They had another opportunity in the 32nd minute when Charlotte Mays (Melrose, Mass.) found herself all alone in the box after a Nikki Feinberg (San Antonio, Texas) corner kick but her header attempt sailed wide left.
Coast Guard had a chance to go ahead in the 18 th minute when Caroline Eastman (East Granby, Conn.) got in behind the Clark defense but had her one-on-one battle with Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) snuffed out by a sliding Paolini.
The pace picked up in the final 45 minutes and when the Bears sent a ball into the box on a cross attempt and a violation was called, setting up the penalty kick.
Duplessis calmly fired the low shot that darted away from Scarlet Paolini and tucked itself into the lower right corner at 72:55.
Clark almost got the equalizer in the 80th minute when Emma Deneault (Holden, Mass.) served a perfect ball to Mays up the right flank. She cut in and fired her shot going right to left but her attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
The Bears held a 16-7 edge in shots, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Clark, meanwhile, had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Holly Moore (Pittsfield, Mass.) needed to make just one save to record her fifth shutout of the season, while Paolini turned aside six shots in 90 minutes of action.
Coast Guard is off until Wednesday when they host Salve Regina at 7:00 p.m. The Cougars will return to the field on Tuesday with a home contest against Elms.
