Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Babson College swept through both of their matches – knocking off both host Clark and Amherst College 3-0 to go 2-0 at a tri-match hosted by the Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The Beavers improved to 14-5 with the two wins, while Amherst earned a split to go to 9-4 and the host Cougars are now 6-8 and 1-3 in league contests.
Babson 3, Clark 0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-18)
The Beavers faced a game Clark squad in opener and in the first set the Cougars were ahead 26-25, but three straight points, including a kill from Mary Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) that gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead.
With the score tied at 12-12 in the second set, Babson jumped ahead 17-13 and were still ahead 22-19 when again three straight points – this time two kills from Jenny Karnes (Houston, Texas) and one from Donahue - put the Cougars away.
The third set was tied at 14-14 when the Beavers went ahead for good, notching the final six points of the set as Clark struggled with portions of their attack game.
Karnes paced the Beaver attack with 13 kills, while Donahue added 11 of her own. Krissy Robertson (Dedham, Mass.) and Angela Price (Medway, Mass.) combined to hand out 35 assists.
The Scarlet and White were led by Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), who hammered down 15 kills and added nine digs, while Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) gave out a match-best 29 assists.
Babson 3, Amherst 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-18)
The Beavers ran their record to 14-5 - including nine straight with a 3-0 win over the Lord Jeffs (8-4). Donahue was at it again, sending down 12 kills, while both Robertson (10) and Lorraine Mackiewicz (11) also reached double figures in the kill category.
Price added 22 assists and Robertson collected the double-double with 21 helpers of her own. Kseniya Pulido (Upland, Calif.) was the star defensively, registering 32 digs.
Amherst struggled on the attack, hitting just .086 but was paced by Lizzie Ahern (Corte Madera, Calif.), who posted seven kills. Defensively, Katie Warshaw (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) recorded 23 digs and Nicole Carter (Irvine, Calif.) tallied a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs.
Amherst 3, Clark 0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-14)
The Lord Jeffs rebounded quickly from their loss to Babson to post an impressive 3-0 win over the host Cougars. Amherst was strong in the first set, hitting a hot .464 as they raced out to a 19-9 lead before settling for a 25-13 win.
After another 25-13 win in the second set, Amherst continued its hitting prowess in the third set, notching ten more kills en route to the 25-14 victory.
After a Heather Todoroff (Louisville, Ky.) service ace, Clark held a 7-5 advantage but the Lord Jeffs went on a scoring run and when the dust cleared they were ahead 18-9.
The Cougars closed the gap to 22-14 on a block from Savonnah Rowe (New York, N.Y.) and Mel Conde (Union City, Calif.), but a Maggie Danner (Newport Beach, Calif.) kill sparks the game-ending spurt, 25-14.
Amherst returns to action on Friday when they play host to Middlebury, while Babson and Clark each return to the hardwood on Tuesday with NEWMAC matchups against Coast Guard and MIT, respectively.
