Box Score Cambridge, Mass. – MIT won for the 11th time in their last 12 games and the host Engineers knocked off Clark University, 3-1 in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at Rockwell Cage.
The win for MIT sends them to an impressive 15-2 overall and 4-1 in league contests and 32-0 all-time against the Cougars. Clark, meanwhile, slips to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in NEWMAC games.
Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) paced the Scarlet and White with a 13-kill, 17-dig effort and Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) added 27 assists.
After dropping the first set 25-17, Clark rebounded for a 25-21 win in the second set – the first time the Cougars have won a set against the Engineers since 2008.
MIT rebounded in the third, scoring six of the last seven points to earn the 25-20 win. They wrapped up the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, getting the final three points all on kills from Jenny Astrachan.
The Engineers racked up 62 kills on the evening led by Astrachan's 19 kills on 40 swings and Megan Gebhard's 17 put downs. Nicole Gagnier, the league's leader in assists, handed out a season-best 53.
Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) notched 12 digs, six kills, and two aces for the Cougars, while Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) had 11 digs and five kills.
Both squads face non-conference opponents in its next outings. MIT will host Simmons College and Tufts University in a tri-match on Saturday, October 4 while Clark will square off with Connecticut College in a home match on Thursday, October 2.
