Cougars Go Cold In 64-45 Loss At Springfield

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – Springfield College clamped down defensively and held Clark University to under 30 percent shooting and the host Pride posted a 64-45 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at Blake Arena.

The loss for the Cougars is their seventh straight, dropping them to 3-11 overall and just 1-5 in conference contests. Springfield, meanwhile, rebounded from their first loss in conference play on Saturday by defeating Clark for the third consecutive time – their longest such streak against the Cougars since a 12-game stretch that spanned 2005-09.

Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) posted her seventh double-double of the season for the Pride, leading all players with 18 points and 11 boards on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.  Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) chipped in 11 points and five boards and Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) produced 10 points and six boards.  Springfield shot 22-for-49 (44.9%) from the floor and turned 16 Clark turnovers into 22 points.

Clark managed to shoot just 15-for-59 (25.4%) from the game, including an 8-for-27 (29.6%) performance from beyond the arc.  The Cougars had two players score in double figures, with Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) registering 11 points and five assists and Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) recording 10 points and four boards.

Clark jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage over the Pride following a converted layup from O'Gara but after a pair of free-throws from Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Springfield evened the score at five apiece. Tied 11-11 midway through the first half, Bickelhaupt converted a three-point play that gave the Pride a three-point lead that was quickly erased by Dominique St. Pierre (Portsmouth, N.H.).

With the game even at 18 with 5:51 remaining after a jumper from Gins, Springfield went on a 12-2 run capped off by a three-pointer from Windwer to give the Pride a 30-20 lead with 1:25 remaining in the stanza. With 10 seconds left in the half, Riley Fake (Brockport, N.Y.) cashed in on an open triple on the wing to give Springfield a 34-22 lead going into the break.

After a deep two from Andrea Moschetta to open the second half, Windwer converted a three from the wing to give the Pride a 15-point advantage, before Lewis extended Springfield's lead to 17 with a baseline jumper.

With a 45-33 lead midway through the second half, Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) converted a nice feed from Dina Pitsas (Milford, N.H.) to give the Pride a 14-point lead, forcing a Clark time-out. Up 52-39 with 4:30 left, O'Gara hit a deep three to cut the Cougars' deficit to 10, before Windwer converted a triple on the ensuing possession, followed by a nice layup underneath the basket from Gins to give the Pride a 15-point lead.

With just under a two minutes remaining, Moschetta found Bickelhaupt outside the arc for a three-pointer to push the Pride's lead to 16, icing the victory for the Pride.

Clark will return to action on Saturday as they continue NEWMAC play with a visit to WPI. Tipoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.
