Worcester, Mass. – Senior Breanna Tucker (Temecula, Calif.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships on the three-meter board and two other swimmers earned first-place finishes as host Clark University came up short in a dual meet against Coast Guard Academy on Sunday afternoon.
The New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference Bears topped the Cougars 134.5-94.5 in a meet that was pushed back a day due to inclement weather.
Tucker registered a score of 270.00 to take top honors on the three-meter board, surpassing the qualifying score of 265.00 needed in a dual meet. She was also victorious on the one-meter board, posting a score of 244.95, besting teammates Leah Guliasi (San Rafael, Calif.), who finished second (163.27) and Mackenzie Wood (Scarborough, Maine) who was third (138.60).
In addition to Tucker, Karina Urquhart (Sanford, Maine) collected a first place finish, touching the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:22.33.
Melissa Orzechowski (Windsor, Conn.) won a pair of events and also finished second in another in another excellent all-around performance. She earned the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.61) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:29.18) where she outdistanced teammate Lydia Berry (5:40.18). Orzechowski (1:58.69) was nearly a three-event winner but Darlene Sao (1:58.67) out-touched her at the wall in the 200-yard freestyle.
Clark will continue its busy week on Wednesday with a road trip to WPI before hosting Brandeis University on Saturday.
