Springfield Holds Off Cougars, 58-46

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Springfield College's Jaime Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) recorded her tenth double-double of the season and the visiting Pride outlasted a hard-charging Clark University squad, 58-46 in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center.

The win for Springfield, not only bumps their record to 14-5 overall and an impressive 9-1 in conference contests, but they extend their winning streak to six games and have now held four straight opponents to below the 50-point threshold.

Bickelhaupt did a lot of her damage in the first half, but even with her totaling 11 points and six boards in the opening stanza, the Pride needed a steal and layup in the waning seconds to even the score at 25-25 going into halftime.

Clark actually led by three on a couple of occasions in the second half. The first being on a Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) three-pointer and again moments later when Gwyneth Ivory (Ashland, Mass.) scored inside off a great Brennan feed, making the score 30-27.

When Sami Dokus (Littleton, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer a few minutes later and Ivory muscled inside again, the Cougars went ahead again, this time at 37-35.

That lead proved to be short lived, however, as Springfield quickly embarked on a 14-1 run that saw Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) score seven straight points and when the smoke cleared, the Pride was looking at a double-digit lead for the first time at 49-38.

Clark (3-14) would get as close as seven at 53-46 on another Dokus three-pointer, but Springfield, despite going just 5-for-11 from the charity stripe in the final 1:20, managed to hold on for the win.

Neither team shot well, with the Cougars connecting on just 26 percent from the field, while Springfield bounced back from a first half that saw them shoot 22 percent, to make 12 of 24 shots in the final 20 minutes.

The Pride held a 44-40 edge on the glass and with the help of King (nine points in ten minutes), outscored the Scarlet and White reserves, 19-7.

Bickelhaupt finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y.), added six points, seven rebounds and five assists. Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) did a little bit of everything, racking up ten points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

Clark was paced by Brennan, who scored ten of her team-high 13 points in the first half. Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) totaled nine points, three assists and two steals in 25 minutes, while Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in with eight and both Dokus (six rebounds) and Ivory (four rebounds) each had seven points.

Both teams return to the hardwood on Saturday with Springfield returning to Worcester for a matchup with WPI and Clark visiting Babson.
