Cambridge, Mass. - A hat trick by freshman Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) coupled with a solid defensive performance from junior Jane Coffrin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) helped propel the MIT field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Clark University in a NEWMAC contest on Saturday.

With the win, the Engineers improved to 8-2 on the year and 4-0 in conference play while the Cougars dipped to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.

 MIT finished the game with a commanding 24-4 advantage in shots, a 17-1 margin in shots on goal, and produced 18 penalty corners while Clark was unable to earn a penalty corner for the first time this season.

Senior goalie Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) turned away one shot as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season for the hosts. Senior Christine Tinsman (Prairie Village, Kan.) collected 11 saves while sophomore Haley Mahan (Bedford, N.H.) bolstered the backline with a defensive save.

Tregoning produced a pair of shots in the opening minute as the Engineers went on to pressure the Cougars' defense for the next five minutes, collecting five penalty corners during that span. Clark nearly broke the deadlock moments later courtesy of a deep run by freshman Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) but Coffrin slipped in to steal the ball.

MIT replied by scoring off its sixth penalty corner of the game when sophomore Katie Notarangelo's (Foxboro, Mass.) shot from the top of the arc deflected off a defender's stick into the top of the cage in the 12th minute. The Engineers doubled their advantage five minutes later following another penalty corner. After receiving a pass from senior Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass.), Notarangelo found Tregoning for the redirection at the near post.

The Cougars almost ended the shutout 48 seconds into the second stanza but junior Lauren Mackey's (Dublin, N.H.) bid was blocked by a defender. The Cardinal and Gray responded by increasing its margin to 3-0 courtesy of a penalty stroke by sophomore Emily Penn (Elkridge, Md.) in the 44th minute. Shortly after action resumed, junior Olivia Cotton (Northampton, Mass.) produced Clark's lone shot on goal that was kicked away by Kyritsis.

Tregoning then wrapped up the scoring for MIT by finding the back of the net in the 53rd and 57th minutes. Her first marker was a solo breakaway effort along the far side that resulted in a shot at the near post. She completed the first hat trick of her career when McNamara slipped a ball from the near side through the arc for the quick tip at the far post.

The Cougars threatened to get on the scoreboard with just over 14 minutes left to play courtesy of a 4-on-2 fastbreak initiated by junior Julia Baud (Utrecht, Netherlands). However, Notarangelo stole the ball at the top of the arc to thwart the attack.

MIT returns to action next Saturday with a trip to conference foe Smith College while Clark will kick off a three-game home stand beginning on Tuesday versus Worcester State University.
