Early Goals Doom Cougars, 3-1

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Wheaton College scored three first-half goals and the visiting Lyons secured a much-needed 3-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at a chilly Granger Sports Complex.

The win sends the Blue and White's record to 8-5 but more importantly, Wheaton picks up their first conference victory and now sit at 1-4 in league contests.

For the Cougars, meanwhile, they have now dropped three straight matches to fall to 5-9 overall and now have the identical 1-4 conference ledger as the Lyons.

Wheaton got on the board early in the contest when Kelsey Buckley (Gilford, N.H.) set up Michelle Trainor (Amesbury, Mass.) off of a penalty corner for Trainor's second goal of the year at 11:23.

That lead doubled in the 30th minute when reserve Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) pushed home her sixth goal at 29:20.

Wheaton was back at it a little more than five minutes later when Peters connected with Buckley for her sixth goal of the year as well at 34:28.

Clark finally got on the board when Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) fed Maria Manning (Manchester, N.H.) with no time left of the clock in the first half.

There was no scoring in the second half as the Lyons went on to avenge last season's 4-3 double overtime loss to the Cougars in the 87th minute.

The Scarlet and White actually outshot Wheaton 10-7 and had a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Riley Thompson (Fairfield, Conn.) was strong in the cage for the Lyons, recording nine saves in her 70 minutes of action.

Clark started Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) in goal and she saw the first 31:12 of action, before giving way to Christine Tinsman (Prairie Village, Kan.), who went the rest of the way and made three saves.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with conference home contests. Wheaton plays host to Babson, while the Cougars welcome Springfield to Worcester.
