Second Half Strikes Down Cougars, 2-0

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Wellesley College posted their second straight shutout and the visiting Blue got a key conference win with a 2-0 triumph over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Tuesday evening.

The win for Wellesley pushes their record to 7-5-2 and more importantly the Blue move to 2-4-1 in league play.

For the Scarlet and White, meanwhile, they slip to 2-11-2 overall and 0-6-1 in conference contests and have now dropped eight matches in a row but are still alive for one of the final spots in the upcoming league tournament.

The contest started out pretty slow and neither team could get on the board in the opening stanza. That changed almost immediately in the second half as Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif.) found the back of the net a little more than five minutes into the frame for her sixth score of the season.

That lead doubled in the 75th minute when Juliette Fry (Atlanta, Ga.) notched her four tally of the season at 74:04, giving the Blue an insurance goal.

Wellesley held a 16-7 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Clark netminder Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) turned aside eight shots for the Cougars, while Blue backstop Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) extended her shoutout streak to more than 200 minutes of action.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday with league contests. Wellesley plays host to Smith College, while Clark visits Wheaton.
