Cougars Split Home Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. - Clark University (13-3) got several standout performances on their way to a tri-match split on Saturday at the Kneller Athletic Center. They opened the day with a 3-0 win over Farmingdale State but dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Connecticut College.

Clark University 3, Farmingdale State 0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-16)
The Cougars breezed past the visiting Rams with little resistance as all 14 members of the Scarlet and White made an appearance.

Hannah Fox (Dracut, Mass.) led the Clark offensive attack with eight kills while the three headed hitting monster of Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.), Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) all chipped in with five kills apiece.

Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) and Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) shared the passing duties for the Cougars, combining for 31 assists.

Defensively, Glass-Smythe paced the way with 11 digs and Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) added ten of her own.

For the Rams, Annie Cosgrove (6) and Barbara Wright (7) combined for 13 of Farmingdale State's 13 kills.

Connecticut College 3, Clark University 2 (13-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-12)
Despite several monster efforts from a very game Cougars squad, Connecticut College rallied to take a 3-2 win over host Clark University in the final match of Saturday's tri-match event.

The Cougars took the first set 25-13 but dropped the second, 25-17. They bounced back to pick up the third by that same 25-17 score and looked to be in position to take the match in the fourth set when they went ahead 21-18. Connecticut College answered back, taking seven of the final nine points to force a fifth and final set.

Almost immediately the Scarlet and White fell behind but bounced back to close the gap to 9-8 following back-to-back kills from Glass-Smythe and Ramos and then again at 13-12 following another Ramos kill.

In the end, however, the Camels proved to be too tough as they got consecutive kills from Mullally and Caroline Martin to secure the victory.

Martin finished with a match-high 16 kills for the visitors to go along with 19 digs. Both Ella Johnson (12) and Jenny Kellogg (10) also racked up double figure kills, while Caroline Branigan ended with 27 digs and Katia Elisman doled out 46 helpers.

For Clark Ramos collected 14 kills and a team-best 23 digs, while Glass-Smythe also produced a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.

Quiban had her second strong effort, totaling 14 digs while Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) registered 21 of her own.

For the sixth time in her standout inaugural campaign, Webb handed out more than 40 assists – registering a career best 50 in the five-set setback.

Connecticut College 3, Farmingdale State 0 (25-10, 25-19, 31-29)
In a match that got increasingly tighter as it went on, Connecticut College shook off a pesky Farmingdale State squad with a 3-0 win.

After a relatively easy 25-10 victory in the first set, the Camels were pushed by the Rams in the second set before falling, 25-19.

The third and final set was a battle that saw Farmingdale State rally from down 22-14 to even the score at 24-24. Incredibly, the Rams served for the set on three occasions but they couldn't get over the hump and a Belinda Mullaly kill ended the set and match at 31-29.
