Box Score Boston, Mass. – Anchored by another huge individual performance from sophomore sensation Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), Clark University wrapped up their best regular season in more than a decade with a 3-1 win over Emerson College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Saturday.
The win for the Cougars sends their record to an impressive 20-7 overall and they complete the ten-match league slate at 8-2. Locked in as the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, the Scarlet and White will host sixth-seeded Wellesley College on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
For Clark, they reach the 20-win plateau for the 11th time in program history, but the first time since the 2001 team went 22-8. Meanwhile, their third place finish is the highest in school history and the eight conference victories are also the most in program history.
Things started out slowly for the Cougars as the Lions surprised the visitors by taking the opening set, 25-22.
The Scarlet and White answered back, knotting the score when they rolled to a 25-16 win in the second and then surged ahead with a 25-17 victory in the third.
Ahead 2-1, the Cougars put the match away with an impressive fourth set, leading by as many as ten points on several occasions before getting a match-sealing kill from Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) at 25-22.
The Scarlet and White were excellent offensively, reaching the 60 kill total for the second time this season and they handed out a season-best 58 assists.
Ramos had her second 20-20 game of the season – finishing with 22 kills and 23 digs to go along with four service aces.
She was joined in the double figure kill category by Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.), who racked up 12 of her own to go with seven digs and Mercado, who chipped in with 11 kills and six digs.
Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the way with 23 digs, while Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) handed out 49 assists and added ten digs.
Emerson (12-13) was paced by Jules Augustine who totaled a team-best 14 kills and Elaine Nichols who dished out 31 assists.
