Clark Stunned By Lyons, 1-0

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Sara Sanau Ruiz continued her scoring outbursts with the match's lone goal in the 83rd minute and visiting Mount Holyoke escaped with a 1-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Tuesday evening.

The win for the Lyons improves their record to 7-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference contests. For the Scarlet and White, meanwhile, they have now dropped four straight to fall to 2-7-2.

Clark controlled possession for most of the match and had several excellent scoring chances of their own but they couldn't convert any of them.

The first came when Grace McElroy-Howard (Watertown, Mass.) unleashed a rocket from about 35 yards out but her rising shot was turned aside near the crossbar by a leaping Zoe Marshall.

Another chance came in the 31st minute when Alex Pariseau (Millbury, Mass.) found Kara Fisher (Belmont, Mass.) through traffic but Fischer's blast towards the upper left corner sailed wide.

For the Lyons, their best chance came when a loose ball at the top of the box found the foot Ashleigh Hartsock and with Clark netminder Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) out of the net, Hartsock had her shot blocked and turned aside by Rylee Simons (Weston, Fla.).

Sanau Ruiz also had a fantastic chance in the 69th minute but her shot moved over the crossbar in the 69th minute.

Mount Holyoke finally broke through when Hartsock and Sanau Ruiz played a fantastic give and go in traffic and Sanau Ruiz slipped a low shot past a diving Paolini at 82:03 for her 13th marker of the year and fifth game-winning goal.

Clark actually held an 18-11 edge in shots and with the Lyons collecting a few in the waning moments of the game, they were ahead in corner kicks (7-6).

Marshall recorded nine saves to post her third shutout of the season for Mount Holyoke, and while Paolini only made four stops, two of them were of the incredible variety including a sliding stop on Jaime Collings in the 47th minute.

The Cougars will look to get back into the win column on Saturday with a road trip to MIT, while the Lyons visit Wellesley on Saturday as well.
