MVP Huffman Key Down The Stretch As Clark Wins, 63-58

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Tournament MVP Tyler Huffman (West Hartford, Conn.) scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and host Clark University wrapped up the 2015 Clark Alumni Holiday Invitational with a 2-0 mark following a  63-58 win over Roger Williams University on Wednesday afternoon at the Kneller Athletic Center.

The win for the Scarlet and White is their second straight, improving their record to 3-8 overall in advance of the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate, which begins in earnest next week.

For the Hawks, meanwhile, their two-game stay in Worcester resulted in a pair of losses by a combined five points, sending their record to 4-6.

Clark led the entire way but never by more than seven – and that large of a lead came in the first half before they settled for 26-23 halftime advantage.

The game was still very much in doubt with a little more than five minutes remaining and after an Austin Coene layup, Roger Williams was within one at 47-46.

Joe Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) buried a leftside triple to get the Cougars some breathing room on ensuing possession but that would be their only basket for the next five minutes. Fortunately for Clark, they were able to take advantage at the charity stripe connecting on 10-of-11 down the stretch.

Even with all that said, Roger Williams had a chance to tie the contest at 58, when they were down three with 45 seconds left to play. Connor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) had a great look at a three-pointer but couldn't get it to fall.

On Clark's next possession -  still ahead by just three – time was winding down on the shot clock and Huffman hoisted a deep three-pointer that splashed through the nets as the horn to the shot clock sounded, giving the Cougars a comfortable, 61-55 lead.

With four seconds left, the Hawks scooped up a loose ball and Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) dropped in a three-pointer to breathe life into RWU's hopes, but John Pisacreta (North Andover, Mass.) made a pair from the free throw line to seal the Clark victory.

Huffman did a ton of his damage at the charity stripe, going a perfect 10-for-10. He was joined in double figures by Luca McCormick (Bradenton, Fla.) who added 14 points and four rebounds in an extremely efficient 20 minutes of action.

David Mercier (Milford, Mass.), who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while Corey Gomes (Uxbridge, Mass.) chipped in with nine points.

For the Hawks, all-tournament performer, Coene led them with 14 points, while Marini had 12 points and five assists and Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) came off the bench and provided ten points and four boards.

Clark will now have a week off before they return to action on Wednesday with road trip to MIT, while the Hawks play again next Tuesday at home against Nichols College.
