Cougars Return To Win Column With 41-36 Victory

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Dominique Saint Pierre (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored seven straight points over a two minute span lifting host Clark University to a thrilling 41-36 win over Wellesley College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

Saint Pierre drilled a leftside corner three-pointer that snapped a 32-32 all tie and the Cougars never looked back, snapping a 12-game losing streak and improving to 4-17 overall and 2-10 in league contests, while the Blue lost for the eighth time in their last nine contests to slip to 6-15.

The 77 combined points is the lowest point total this season for Clark, who found themselves down by as many as eight late in the second half as Wellesley asserted their dominance on the interior.

After a low scoring first half that saw the Blue lead 18-14 at intermission, Wellesley surged to a 22-14 edge when Morgyne Weaver (Oklahoma City, Okla.) found Chelsi Scott (Portland, Mich.) underneath for an easy two.

Clark immediately went on a 7-0 run as Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) scored four points and her backcourt partner Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer.

Back-to-back baskets from Weaver and Natalie Anderson (Bellevue, Wash.) gave the Blue some breathing room and then a few minutes later Anderson's rebound and putback along with a Weaver inside hoop had Wellesley in command at 32-24.

The Cougars then embarked on their game-alerting 15-0 run that saw Saint Pierre work her magic and the defense stiffen, not allowing the Blue to score for the better part of six minutes. When the dust settled following a pair of O'Gara free throws, the Cougars were ahead by seven with 20 seconds to play.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, with Wellesley connecting on 38 percent of their attempts and the Cougars going just 10-for-43.

The Blue controlled the interior, holding a slight 34-32 edge on the glass but a sizable advantage on points in the paint (30-4).

Weaver led all scorers with 15 points and four rebounds for Wellesley, who also got six points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals from Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, Calif.).

O'Gara was the lone Clark player in double figures, totaling 12 points, while Sullivan had eight points and three assists and Saint Pierre scored all seven of her points during that crucial two-minute stretch.

The Blue returns to the hardwood on Saturday with a home contest against Mount Holyoke. The Scarlet and White, meanwhile, waste little time returning to action as they play host to Pine Manor tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
