Indian Wells, Calif. – Playing against one of the nation's elite teams, the Clark University men's tennis squad dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 2 Claremont Mudd-Scripps late Saturday night at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The match, which was moved from CMS' home court due to weather conditions, was played at California's crown jewel facility about 90 minutes southeast of the Claremont campus.
CMS breezed through doubles action, dropping a single set en route to a 3-0 lead. First Nik Marino and Bryan Mehall defeated Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio), 8-1 at No. 1 and Glenn Hull and Alex Brenner teamed up to top Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.), 8-0 at No. 2. The score was the same at No. 3 where Lestter Yeh and Rohan Shankar blanked Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) and Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.).
Singles action began with Hull moving past Pinoargote at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0 and Marino getting by Pinkney, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Brenner defeated Burger at No. 5 and Shankar topped Simonson at No. 6 by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Goodstein put up a fight at No. 4 before bowing out to Mehall, 6-2, 6-2 as did Stein at No. 1 until Wood eventually gutted out the 7-5, 6-1 win.
The Cougars (2-5) return to the hardwood on Sunday with a match against, Caltech (California Institute of Technology).
