Worcester, Mass. – Down 2-1 after doubles, Clark University rallied to win five of six singles matches on their way to a convincing 6-3 win over Wheaton College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis action in a match played at Holy Cross' Sinnott Tennis Facility.
The win for the Cougars improves their overall record to 3-7 and gives them a 1-0 ledger in conference contests, while the Lyons are 4-3 and have dropped back-to-back matches.
After going nearly a month without a match, the Scarlet and White fell behind in doubles action. First Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) couldn't catch up with Lawrence Chan and David Gassen at No. 1, falling 8-6.
The story was the same at No. 2, where Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) and Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) were topped by Shreve Archer and Will White.
Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.) got Clark on the board with an easy 8-3 win over Alden Zeff and Jim Beaton at No. 3.
Singles action proved to be all Clark, beginning with Siegel breezing to a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Tyler White at No. 6.
Stein followed that up with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gassen at No. 1 and Pinoargote outlasted Chan, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 3.
Wheaton got its singles win at No. 2 where White took down Pinkney 7-6, 6-2.
Clark continued its run through singles with Burger's straight set 6-2, 6-2 win over Zeff at No. 5 and the Goodstein's hard fought 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Archer.
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday with a road trip to league foe Babson College. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m.
